I hate to elaborate but. When I was Confirmation age the class made the confirmation. The next day before and during all the classes, everyone chatted about "we got" "we went" "mom and dad couldnt do enough" and several parents held parties, gathered money from relatives...Well, another boy and I really received the Sacrament of Confirmation that day. Our parents did really nothing but support the cause and explain why we received the sacrament. We felt truely blessed!
I definately would make the gift a religious gift and small as a remembrance of the occasion.
Ask him why and what benefit the sacrament will do for him.
I was told it is the soldiers sacrament of being able to defend your religion against nonchristian religions.

I got a small gold cross on a chain for my confirmation. You could also get him a blank journal for his thoughts, or a card and money.

Give him a gift card, that way you got him something but he can go get whatever he wants, trust me that is all a teenager wants.

You can give him a bible , and slip some money in the book, this way he can get what he wants too. and be there for him when he needs to talk to someone.

Actually, a godparent is assigned during baptism. You will be his sponsor.
A nice bible would work.
