We have decided to get a Weimaraner and a Vizsla. All the books and people we have spoken to have said to not get them at the same time because they will bond with each other first. What is a healthy time period to wait before introducing a second dog? We plan on getting the Vizsla first so it may be an example to the high energy Weimaraner.

I agree you should wait, but, you do not want to wait too long. If you do the first dog may become possessive, and territorial, and may not get along with the new dog.

I would recomend no more than two maybe three months. At that point the first dog will be used to his new home, but will still be acceptive of more new things without being overwhelmed.

And always make sure that they will get along before leaving them alone. And certainly make sure that you spend alot of time with them while they are first getting used to each other. (break-up the disaggreements)

DON'T GET THEM AT THE SAME TIME!!!

We went ahead and got our puppies at the same time and training them has been close to impossible!! They are 2 now and still more bonded with each other than we us.

I would recommend getting the more energetic dog first. Take your time to train him and then when he is integrated into your family introduce the new dog. A high energy dog will take to a new dog around easier than the other way around!

Talk to your breeder, they will probably have some good advice on this subject. Also your vet should be consulted. Two puppies at the same time will keep themselves amused but long term its much better to space them out by about 6 months.

You can get them at the same time, but its going to be twice the work.

I'd personally wait until the first dog is housetrained, and well behaved before bringing home the second. Dogs will learn by example of other dogs, and this includes good habits and bad.

The only reason to get them at different times is so the puppy can bond with you and not with the other puppy. It's very similar to kids. I would wait to get the second puppy at least until you have house broken the first puppy and it has bonded to you. No body wants two puppies that bond to one another and never mind their keepers.

As for the puppies going after one another if you get them at different times, like other have said... I never found that to be true with my dogs. Yes you may see some aggression at first but, that is true of any animal, they need to establish who is Alpha dog. But they will not be so aggressive that they will kill each other or never get used to one another.

I don't see why you can't get them at the same time. They would bond right away, instead of one getting mad that he is no longre an only child.

no, i'd get them together. if you wait, the one that's been with you longer may show aggression towards the new pup and be territorial.
