No it's not to get them to go to sleep it's so that they can feel more relaxed when the plane takes off and the popping of the ears doesn't hurt them as much. Because unless you can get a drink from one of the fast food places for them because they wont let you go through the bag checking with anything that has more than 3fl oz. If you have anything that is more than 3oz they either take it of if it's a drink they in one of the kids cups they'll dump it out.

I traveled with my twin sons twice to Germany, my husband was stationed there for the army. The first time they were 7 months old, and i flew alone with them, the second time they were 18 months old and i flew with them but hubby was there to help. Do not give the kids any medicine. Truthfully, if you bring snacks, toys ect....they will probably do just fine. If not, kids cry...people might get annoyed but you know what, thats what kids sometimes do! haha We had awesome flights both times, my kids were wonderful, slept a lot the first time. The help we got on the flights was amazing as well. People helping us with our things ect. Its not that bad. Good luck!!

I heard giving children poi, perhaps mixing with milk.

I'm not sure if they make/have that wherever you are, but I wouldn't know, cause I've lived in Maui since I was 3.
