We are in the market for a new mattress and box spring set. Mattresses are easier to chose because you can try them in the store but we are illusive as to what we should do about a box spring. At this time I can not sleep in our bed because it causes to much pain. (I was in an accident a few months ago. I have sought medical attention and was told by the therapist that the type of bed I have does not offer enough support.) We currently have a split box spring. Do they give added support or should we give them up for a single box spring in addition to a firmer matttess, and if so what kind should we look into?

The box spring is the "foundation" for the set..and therefore should always be replaced when buying a new mattress...however, your "comfort" level comes from the mattress...(and you must also be sure there are enough slats on the bed (if it uses slats) to support the combined weight of you and the bedding....
I sold high end furniture for many years (15)..and the couple of things I always told customers in the store: You MUST lay down on it...lie in the position you usually sleep in...don't "push" around it with your knuckles...you sleep on your BACK not your Hands...whatever you feel in the store, will be magnified at night...ie: a little too firm in the store means REALLY firm at night...same with too soft...you do not have to have a FIRM mattress for a bad back...mattresses are made these days with lots and lots of engineering and study.....however, you WILL get what you pay for...a cheap mattress will be a CHEAP mattress...you spend a third of you life in bed...you should have the best mattress you can afford....as it affects how you feel all day long...and don't skimp on mattress sets for kids...their little backs are growing and they need as much support as you do..

I had problems with my old mattress and invested in a memeory foam mattress. Its awesome. Its really firm but conforms to your body. I sleep so well now. They cost more but its worth it
