Usually the left. Pilots have many different type ratings in the interest of safety. Examples of type ratings are different types of aircraft (B727, DC9), different types of landing gear (tires vs. floats), number of engines, etc.
Left seat flying and right seat flying both require the pilot being rated for those seats. When a copilot is undergoing training for the captain's chair, he will often sit in the left seat while a checker Captain flys in the right seat.

Usually the captain sits on the left, but during training my trainer (and probably almost anyone elses) sat on the right so I could get used to sitting on the left. Anyone can fly the plane from either the right or left side including the captain.

Captains Choice, Usually they CHOOSE to fly from the left and some company's rules state where the Capt sits. In the big sceme of things it makes no difference,

In the single engine small airplane, most pilots fly from the left seat as this is where the instruments are directly in front of the pilot.
In the Piper Cherokee I fly in, I prefer to fly from the right seat when I have passengers because the only door is on the right side. I learned to fly from the right side primarily because I am eventually going to become a Certified Flight instructor, I have the commercial certificate to get first, then the CFI

Depends on if he is the flying pilot. I just read an article in Flying magazine where the Captain was in the right seat while the First Officer flew from the left.

Apparently everyone here flies airplanes, in which the left side would be right. In helicopters, generally the captain is on the right.
