The Southern flag is similar to the Union Jack (the UK), what you call the rebel flag, or Confederate. The Union was the North, or the rest that did not want to secede. You may have seen the Union Jack and the similarity to Dixie, because of the pattern.

BTW: it is referred to as The War Between the States in certain circles, because Civil War is an oxymoron, especially that one!

The South had the Confederate flag; that's why ignorant people who see someone with the confederate flag assume they are racist. The civil war wasn't just about slavery it was about unfair taxation and states' rights as well. Being from the South is a part of my heritage and the Confederate flag will fly in my front yard along with the Texas flag and The United States of America flag.
