U.S. citizens are not and were never restricted to go. They just published a warning about it. It should be fine.

As for hotels, I would suggest this site as it compares the best rates from all the top sites, and you can just book from this site:

If you are looking for beach, do not go to Phuket. While it has nice beaches, it is a built up beach city with chains such as McDonalds, etc. I would highly suggest the more quaint but easy to get to beach destinations that have smaller capacity to preserve the beautiful beach/island experience that Thailand offer. I highly suggest Koh Phi Phi Island. Two ferries per day will get you there and back from either Phuket or Krabi. You can get flights from all over southeast asia into both cities. The ferry ride to Phi Phi is about 90 minutes and very beautiful! I also suggest Trang and Railay Beach (often called Krabi). East Railay will be less expensive and is only a 3 minute walk to West Railay beach.
I highly recommend the north of Thailand, including Chaing Mai and Chaing Rai. Chaing Mai is larger and has some amazing temples, very nice people, great restaurants and shopping in the night bazaar.
Bangkok is a huge city that is extremely dirty and for the most part not something I would prioritize over the northern part of te country and the beaches, they are far more spectacular and far more representative of the beauty that Thailand has to offer.

Have a wonderful trip!

It depends on what you like to do while your on vacation? If your a sun and beach type person head for the south Phuket, samiu or Krabi, all of which have loads to do IE snorkeling, diving, fishing and excellent eating too. Or you could perhaps do a circuit of northern Thailand taking in such places as Chaing Mia Chaing Ria and Mae Hon son (a personal favorite) all of which can be done easily in a week, then why not have a few days in the capital, 4 days is enough for me! Go shopping, see the sights even more temples! or go see the crocs at Samut Prakan.Once you've had enough of Bangkok the chose is yours either head towards Ko chang or Ko Kut or maybe Ko samet all on the Eastern side of the gulf all offer fantastic options for accommadation though I prefer Ko Kut (old style bungalows).
Or you could go to southern gulf coast, Cha am were the Thai Royals holiday is nice and theirs plenty of reasonably priced places to stay or a bit further south is Hau Hin which is ok but their a lot of building going on, but I normally get the Express train down to Chumpon and have a few days here before deciding wether too go to Samiu or head across too Phuket.
There is a lot of info about phuket & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60og9gwKh1

What ever you decide hope you have a great time!

Kumustaka. Thailand has 76 provinces and there are unique sights spread out in various provinces. It will be a matter of what kind of activities you are looking for while in Thailand.

In general, the beach resorts are in the south, especially in Phuket area. There are many fine beaches in the nearby provinces of Krabi and Phang-nga too.

Cooler mountain regions will be in the north of Thailand, to Chiangmai, Chiangrai or Mae Hong Son. If you like the green jungles, then Tak or Nan may be an option.

Even in the northeast at Khao Yai, you can get the hilly resorts too.

If you are looking for old ruins, then these can be found around in provinces of Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Surin, Kanchanaburi, etc.

And the all time favourite for most visitors, shopping. This will have to be in Bangkok.. Unless you want to travel around and experience other types of shopping.

So all this will depend on you and your time.

You can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com if you want more specific recommendations. Meantime, you can look at the many attractions in Thailand at www.tourismthailand.org first.

You can expect a good time there.

I think you should call the department of state and get some info because i know a couple months ago us residents were restricted to go because of the national problems they had but i dont know if that cleared.
