It's a trait from their wild days. In the wild, big cats like lions, etc. will bury their uneaten food to hide it from scavengers until they're ready to eat the rest. My cat covers his uneaten food with invisible sand all the time. It's just instinct.

this isnt specific to jus females, in the wild the cat would cover its food to hide it from others, this is because most cats naturally only eat a little food, but many times a day, so in the wild it would lose it to another animal, if u want to see this in action, put a clean sock near the bowl next time u feed, and the sock will probably end up in the bowl as if to cover the food, make sure u wash the sock again lol

one of ours does it all the time, she's a very fussy eater, and the food's hardly in the dish when she starts going through the motions of covering it. She does it to grub she doesnt like but doesnt want another cat to have it either, so she's hiding it for maybe later. She never does it when she really likes something or really really hungry.

The kitty is trying to "bury" its leftover food and save it for later. It's an instinct from when they were wild and hid their leftover gazelle, or whatever, from other predators. You can see big cats do that on nature shows.

My cat does that too, I thougth she didn't like her food, not so, it seems many cats do that, maybe she thinks to save it. Mine does it almost every time, and she loves her food, no problems there. Maybe their natural instinct to hide it, I don't worry about it, its normal, any vet will say so,

It means that your cat is going back to when it's ancestors(the bigger cats) used to dig for water and also bury their food and redig it up when needed.

If she does this with her back paws and then leaves the area, she doesn't like the food and she's telling you to bury it.
