I have a 2002 civic by the way and it seems a lot of work to get either set of speakers out

Before you change the speakers think about changing the head unit first. Factory fitted units can be OK but a normally terrible for sound plus you can be very limited with a factory unit as to what you can change or add.

If you can get a unit that allows you to adjust the balance and fade for the speakers. That way you can tweak the sound from each speaker so it places you in the 'middle'.

Next invest in better sound deadening for the car. This will benefit you by reducing the unwanted noise from the road, wind etc meaning you can hear your music better.

As for speakers I would change the full set at the same time so you get balanced sound. If you change one set only then definitely do the rear speakers and fit a good shelf rather than the factory fitted to gain the most.

If you are not sure what to do speak to someone in a car audio store and see what they suggest for your wants. Just don't get carried away and end up with huge subwoofers in the trunk/boot unless you want to end up deaf as a post.

Either way you need to replace ALL 4 speakers. I would replace the front speakers first as those are the ones you would hear the best. Then replace the rear as those will give you depth, the stereo sound. But you need a 6 speaker system. 2 in the door panels. Especially when you go the cheapo route.

The front ones if it is sound clarity that you are wanting to improve. This is because the human ear differentiates most sounds at higher frequencies. For example stereophonic sounds can only be discerned at multiple KHz frequencies. Bass frequencies cannot be ascertained stereophonically by the human ear. Hence why bass and sub-bass sub-woofers use only one speaker, which can be chucked anywhere within the listening environment, whereas treble speakers (mid-range and tweeters) should be placed equidistant from the human ear for each channel (left or right). In a car the treble from the rear speakers gets soaked up by the upholstery and the speakers tend to be quite low. The mid-range speakers in the front and the tweeters mounted in the dashboard provide direct sound waves to your ears and will subsequently give you a better listening experience.
I hope that this helps you.

the front speakers sound waves will enter your ears first if you are in the front seat. you will hear all the high notes from these speakers. the fronts are the ones to replace. the rear speakers are behind you and fill in the mid and deeper tones from where you sit. you will not hear the clear tones from these speakers because the sound waves will reach you last and that is AFTER they bounce off the entirior and travel THROUGH the seats.

Replace the front first.

Fronts

Especially if you want to just hear clear music.

Backs - if you listen to the music loud, which I would believe since you have 2002 car that needs the speakers to be replaced.

If you have the Bose system don't as you will have to bypass the amplifiers. I would suggest you upgrade the head unit first any way as the speakers will only ever sound as good as the audio you put into them

You should probably replace the Civic first.
Get a real car. With Bose factorys. That way, you don't have to put in aftermarkets.

Change the front ones coz those are the speakers you hear most. The rear ones are for depth only.
