the more you weigh the more you burn because you are dragging all that extra weight and it takes energy.
The calories burned is not what makes you lose weight. it is the toning and conditioning of your entire body and systems so that in the future it will burn calories at a higher rate even sitting still. You cannot ever walk enough to just burn off the extra calories from walking. You are training to change your body's basic metabolic rate, not just burning calories. You could eat a hamburger as you walk and still benefit from the exercise and eventually lose weight. Once the body learns that it must work and that there is no fear of starvation, it will burn calories like a cadillac instead of a VW. Fat people usually have very low metabolic rates because of frequent on and off dieting makes the body fear that at any moment it could be faced with no food so it stores fat. if you eat by nibbling all the time and walking a lot your body will change to be slim and lean and stop storing fact because it knows it will be fed every hour or two. So get up and walk a lot every day. take the stairs. park far from the store or work. walk to get that milk or mail if close enough. you can walk five miles to the mall to see a movie and then walk back. Eat all the popcorn and cany you want. it will just turn into energy for the walk.
Truly thin people eat a lot and burn a lot of calories with everything they do. Their bodies are very in-efficient fuel users and burn it up. Fat people are very efficient fuel users and save it up for emergencies in the from of fat. They never make any extra movements and stay as still as they can be and always sit if possible rather than stand. ( this is like the behavior of starving people)
Fat people gorge when there is food available, just like starving people. Thin people nibble all day and eat what they want but never get too full as it prevents them from moving about and having that fully awake energetic feeling they like. ( you will like it too) Thin people stand and pace and do everything
inefficiently like they had fuel to spare so it conditions the body to burn fuel fast. They only snack as if they know there was a full meal available and they are saving their appetites so the body gets relaxed and stops worring about the possibility of starvation. This is deep in the genes of humans who have had to survive thousands of famines over the eons. The only human genes that survived was the ones that learned to gorge and store fat so it has become a biological imperative that is no longer needed in modern western civilization. it may help you to survive in darfur but you do not need this skill here in USA.

The rule usually is 100 cal/mile. Thus, if in one hour, you walk 5 miles, you burn at least 500 cal. If you're really overweight, you'll burn more than 500 cal, and could possilbly burn up to 1000 cal.

all answers above mention distance and incline which really matter ...to know how many youve walked off you can go get a monitor like a wrist watch that measures heartrate and calories burned which will at least give you an idea...try wallmart for something like that....i dont think theyre too expensive...http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4858051

Of course it depends on your speed and if there are any hills/inclines. At most I would say 300.

Fatter people burn more when they move compared to skinnier people. For me is about 400-500calories...I think.
