Use something more unique to you for a place card, try using something that is Incorporated in your wedding. What are your colors? Example : a Burgundy wedding can have pomegranates as card holders, a green wedding can have apples. Other good place card holders: Cinnamon, cookies, brownies. Does your wedding already have a theme? Example: Chinese themed could use chopsticks, western could use scented cowboy hat car air fresheners. Things like this can double as place card holders and favors!
The plain truth is use you imagination and your wedding theme to help you choose a non-typical place card holder.
A few good websites have ideas like this:

www.weddingchannel.com and

Good Luck and Best Wishes!

You can create them yourself on your computer. All they are are index cards anyway. Go to Office Max and by a couple of boxes of the perforated type (different sizes to choose from) that you can print right through your own printer. They do not need to be fancy but you can use different script fonts if you want. All - in all you'll spend maybe $40 on them. What may cost a bit more is the card holders, which if you get creative, you can find a way to make those. However, you can also go to a party supply store or look around online to buy them in bulk. Good luck.

Depending on your color scheme, you could do a million different things, from seashells, to polishes stones, small pieces of fruit w/ the persons name/table number pinned to it (saw this in Martha Stewart Living w/ green apples) single inexpensive flowers, or even good quality silk flowers/flower heads. You actually don't even need a place card holder, if you buy the type that are "tented" in other words, they stand on their own and don't need a holder at all!

The most inexpensive way I've seen is to make them into napkin rings. They require almost as much setup as they do creation, but they're nice and you don't have to worry about people not taknig them home, because they're disposable!
Buy paper that can bend nicely without creasing, and cut them into strips wide enough to fit the guest's name on. Write with a nice pen or marker their name (or use a computer), Roll them around the napkins at the dinner table, and that's it! You can have them pre rolled and just pull the napkins through, or you can have someone with scotch tape attaching them at the setup time.

I found a really cute idea for these in the latest issue of Modern Bride magazine.
Print them out on your printer at home on index cards or cardstock (cut). Fold the cards in half; at the top of the card, glue a cute decorative ribbon, and at the end of the ribbon (or even in the middle), place a cute little flower, charm, etc.
I really thought it looked cute and original - not to mention cheap and easy to do!
Best Wishes!

I have seen cards that were folded to look like little chairs, each tied with a littel ribbon that looked like a sash for the chair, the names were printed on the back rest of each chair. Very cute and I am sure easy to do at home.
another option is to have strips of paper curled, each guests name is written on the paper and then hung from the wine glass that is at each table setting, looks very classy and romantic.
Instead of doing individual place cards have thier names printed at the table numbers card and allow open seating.
Oh and one more...get frosted tea light holder (mass amounts really cheap at ikea) go to your local sign shop (fast signs are every where) and give thema list of your guests names, they will cut vinyl for you in any color and place each guest name on the tea light so they are illuminated, kills to birds with one stone, candle ambiance and name card

what are your colors or theme? if I give some ideas maybe it will inspire you to find something appropriate. (honestly, I dont know about place cards but they are names for who sits where, correct?)
how about slicing the bottom of an orange so it will sit without rolling and writing the names on the oranges or some organic fruit or veggie? you might carve designs on them also or dyes.
and top with a flower or carve a hole in the top of the fruit...umm
You could find some colorful leaves and write the names on them. sorry, hehe Im always thinking nature. lol
umm Cut up a nice wide ribbon to make placecard sized pieces and do some 'flag' type thing with small diameter dowels and stick it in clay to hold in place on tables. ?? dunno. You could always design something on a computer paint program and print out also.
good luck, happy nuptuals

what about printing your own to save money, they sell the templates at staples or something and you can print from your own comp.... Then get ribbon something pretty in your wedding colors and hang the place cards from a flowr arrangment or something.... I have seen it done and it looks great and its inexpensive because your only paying for the ribbon which isn't expensive. Good Luck.

Here is a diy website that has a few different ways of doing place card holders.
http://www.wnetwork.com/topics/home_garden/do_it_yourself/main.asp?fid=45
I was thinking you could use the little favor bag and just add a little tag card on it instead of the paint on the ribbon.
Also here is one for THE Martha Stewart :) It's cute for something a little more fancy,

Have fun and congrats!

Why don't you just dye-cut little paper bags and put them together in one of your wedding colors. Then put labels on them that says the guests name and table number and fill the bags with candy. There, you have your place cards and wedding favors done!
