My 92 year old mother has a bad cold and has to drink lactaid milk with her other medications. However, I know that milk causes mucus. Someone has told me that lactaid does not. I just don't see how that can be. At any rate, she has to drink 3 glasses a day. Does anyone know for sure? Please help, as I have asked this question under 2 different catagories today and have had no luck at all. Thanx!

I must admit that I had never given this much thought, but I did an experiment due to your question. My boyfriend regularly drinks whole milk and we had run out just a few days ago. I drink lactaid milk and he wanted to have some cereal for breakfast so he was forced to use the milk that was there. Well, this morning he told me that even with the Lactaid milk, he still gets mucus. I tried it and noticed it too that no matter what type of milk that comes from animals, I get mucus. We both have better results with things like Rice Milk, although they don't taste as nice.

Although it seemed that it was the milk, I am not sure if our results may have been biased based on the fact that we knew what we were looking for, so I did some research. I saw some medical information from a Dr. Mercola who addressed this issue.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

"The bottom line, though, is that any problems that stem from milk are most assuredly from pasteurized milk, NOT raw milk. Not only does raw milk not cause problems for most people--and it is becoming increasingly popular--but also it can actually be considered a health food for most.

If you are still drinking regular milk I would encourage you to discontinue this practice as soon as possible. The growth hormones that have been found in milk that was written about in one of my past newsletter articles are only one of the reasons why this should be considered.

The major issue is the pasteurization of the milk, which completely changes the structure of the milk proteins (denaturization) into something far less than healthy. Then, of course there is the issue of the antibiotics and pesticides and the fact that nearly all commercial dairy cows are raised on grains, not grass, like they were designed to. This will change the composition of the fats, especially the CLA content."

I hope that this has been helpful. You can read more at the link I provided below.

She should not be drinking cow's milk in the first place. Stop drinking it and she will likely feel much better.

Humans are the only animal that drinks milk past infancy, and then it's not even from the correct species! Too many people are still trying to defend milk's supposed health benefits. Unfortunately, they are either using old information or information obtained from research funded by the dairy association. How many people would enjoy a glass of dog's milk or rat's milk? What makes cows special?

There are only two reasons which I've found to support humans drinking cow's milk. We have grown up hearing that it's good for us and we've grown accustomed to the taste and texture. There is absolutely no nutrition that can not be obtained elsewhere, minus the negatives. Calcium seems to be the major claim for milk. It can be found elsewhere in green vegetables, almonds, and many other sources. Where do you think the cows obtain the calcium to put into the milk? Where do other larger animals (elephants, horses, deer, whales, etc) get calcium? Why we continue to drink cow's milk laced with growth hormones, antibiotics, and who knows what else is beyond me.

Since I've given up drinking milk about 5 years ago my health has greatly improved. I suffer fewer allergy problems, asthma and breathing problems are greatly reduced, I'm sleeping better, and I have more energy.

In the '50s smoking was considered harmless but now we realize its dangers. One person at a time and eventually the truth will become widely known that cow's milk is only for baby cows. Milk is indeed the perfect food, but only for infants of the proper species.

Do some research online and decide for yourself.
