I am Roman . I have visited the catacombs of Rome several times. I confim entirely the answer of ''al_murazo''.

In cidentally the christian were not fought for their religion but because they refused to obey to te Emperor.

Ancient Romans were very intelligent if you think that in Rome exists the Pantheon, I.E. a temple for ALL religions that were tolerated if they did non endanger the State of the Roman Empire

The catacombs were Rome's cemeteries, and they were winding labyrinths were people could get waylaid ( in to-days' words mugged) quite easily. Therefore, even the Roman authorities did not go much there because the Christians there could defend themselves, since no Roman soldiers in great numbers could descend on them at any one time !
