LCD.
There is ONLY one reason to consider Plasma and that is if you need to watch somewhere that the ambient light level is VERY high.
Plasma cost more
Plasma is more prone to failure earlier
Plasma uses much more power (ecological and consideration)
Plasma is heavier

LCD's come in smaller sizes, the smallest plasma is around 36". Also, the larger LCD's are much more expensive than the large plasmas.
Plasmas have gotten a bad reputation for image burn in which happens when a static image is left on the screen for too long. Also, they do run hot and thus need cooling fans. They are heavier and if you plan on muting it on the wall, will require a heftier mount than an LCD unit of the same size. Plasmas look best in low light conditions.
However, LCD units aren't without their problems. Viewing angle - especially on the cheaper units are poor. Also, LCD's take longer to respond to fast motion (screen lag) so anything quickly changing on the screen will appear blurry. LCD units are good for areas that are bright as the screen is less reflective than plasmas. More expensive LCD units have higher resolution than plasma units. Currently only LCD units have 1080p capabilities.
Me? I own a plasma unit. A 42" Panasonic. Why? because it was on sale for a ridiculously low price and many people had good reviews for it. Also, I didn't like the drawbacks of an LCD unit - viewing angle and the screen lag. My wife and I watched the football playoffs in HD on it an we were both impressed by the picture quality.

I think it would be better to go for LCD for now, because plasma technology is like an experimental stage of HDTV (watch the ridiculous price drops in plasma TVs). If you wait for a few years to get more advanced TV, then I would recommend that. However, if you want a TV right now, I recommend you to get LCD HDTVs. It has less setbacks than plasma, and it will last long time (40 years on 4hr/day). As for the blur in fast motion, I recommend HP, Sharp, LG, and Panasonic which nearly eliminated that problem over the years with top LCD models.

You won't get a straight answer to that question because both are very good and improving. If you plan on watch in a bright room with backlighting, you should look hard at LCD. Other than that, they are very similar in performance as long as you get the latest models.
