I'm a runner and I never stretch cold muscles. Stretching will improve your overall performance and flexibility, but stretch a muscle that hasn't been warmed up and you're asking for injury. I usually walk for 5 or 10 minutes to warm the muscles up, then stretch. Same with the end of the workout.
