I woke up last night and had a cramp in my right calf.I tried working it out, but it just got worse so I stood up. When I stood up I got the most aweful cramp in the back of my left thigh. It spread to my rear and then up into my back. It was terrible. I couldn't walk or move.I started getting slight cramps in my arch, then my ankes about 4 weeks ago. I drink plenty of water, I eat well and I get enough exercise. This has never happened to me before. What could it be?

The non-medical term for leg cramps is "Charlie Horse". I use to experience the same thing in my calves and toes. It is excruciating, and yes ALWAYS when your asleep.! At the time that I was experiencing these cramps, I was on the "Atkins Diet". If you are not familiar with it, the diet is a very high protein diet. I eventually went to my Dr. and he said it was not healthy, so I went back to moderation. I just went and found my old Atkins book and will give you the reasons that are stated, leg cramps are addressed in the book so I believe it is a major issue with those who follow the diet....The book states:" that if you are having leg cramps, that you are probably losing too many electrolytes, which are full of minerals.Any weight loss program has a diuretic effect, and that you should be sure to stay hydrated.Supplement with potassium, magnesium and calcium in addition to your multivitamin, and the cramps should disappear."...You did not say if you were dieting or not, but check out your vitamins, if you do not take any, you shoul probably look into a good multivitamin. I hope that this helps.

Muscle cramps can be caused by a calcium and magnesium imbalance in the body and by lack of Vitamin E.To help prevent the recurrence of cramps, take a regular tonic of apple cider vinegar. Take 3 teaspoons of Apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of water along with1 teaspoon of honey!! NEVER TAKE IT NEAT!! Always mixed with water or juice!!! Try taking BEFORE MEALS. Everyday, 3 times a day BEFORE MEALS!! I buy BRAGG's APPLE CIDER VINEGAR because it is a good brand. TRY IT!! BE patience!!! Next time when you feel like a cramp is coming-- do this exercise. Stretch out your legs while on a bed with your FOOT and toes BENDING BACKWARD TOWARDS YOU!! STAY IN THAT POSITION FOR 3 MINUTES. Then relax. REPEAT several times till pain is gone. Do not get up quickly nor stand up . Relax in the bed for another 30 minutes. DON'T MOVE SO MUCH!!

Are you taking enough calcium?
Are you on your feet alot, with few breaks?

These could be the causes of your problem.
