I have noticed the same problem in my own parish of a small town. Its definitely a difficult issue. I am currently a freshman a catholic university and actively participate in the church activities. One thing I have noticed that stands out tremendously over my parish church is that there is a closer relationship among members which results in a more lively and and participation in the eucharist. Here at the university, programs outside of mass help build these relationships and help the individuals understand the importance of their faith and Sunday Mass attendance, whether its faith-sharing groups, bible study groups, service, etc. I know at my parish at home they have been using a program called "Why Catholic", where members of the parish meet once a meet in a group where discuss their faith and other related topics......So....I too feel your concern and wish the best of luck to you and your parish - God bless

I guess I would be considered a lapsing Catholic. It isn't that I don't want to go, I just haven't gotten back into the routine of going. I believe in what the Church teaches, but it's hard to live up to expectations of the Church, especially if you're denied the sacrements for some reason. Our church here is strict when it comes to having a child babtized. If you are not a member, or haven't attended for a long time, or even who you want as God Parents isn't right in their minds, then the babptism can been denied. I don't believe any child should be denied babtism for the failure of their parents attending church on a regular basis. It isn't their strict attendance that should just be considered, but how they plan to raise that child knowing Jesus's love that should be considered, amoung other things. Also, a lot of Catholic's don't have fellowship with other members of the church. You go in, participate in Mass, and leave. There is little in the way of having fellowship with other members of the church....making it a "family away from family".

Maybe a lot of people are disgusted with the priest scandal? My in-laws sure are. They stopped going to mass a few years ago and they had been going ever Sunday since they've been married - over 50 years!

i think it depends on why they left the Church in the first place. i was raised a Catholic and left because my husband is not. they do not make any allowances for couples who are not the same religion. I now go to a non-denominational church. also i have issues with their belief on birth control.

Well, Catholics can't just snap their fingers and convert someone. It takes time, a lot of patience. You can not change someone if they don't want to change in the first place. People are people, and we all have our share of weaknesses and mistakes.

Call, visit them at home, bring them to Mass, visit them when they are sick or in the hospital, get a phone list and divide up the names.

You know....be good Catholics.

Be active in the community, show that you care for the people and not just in saying mass. Basically, practice what you preach.

Tough question. How to restore people's faith in a church that has discredited itself as thoroughly as the Catholic church has?

Would it not be better to leave the Catholic church alone and allow it to die the death it so richly deserves?

its a very very hard thing to do. the same is true for my town, which is furthernore in the baptist bible belt. The best is to hold theology on tap, and start a knights of columbus council.
