Does anyone have any ideas on what can be done done with stray cats? Over the last few week we have been getting more and more of them hiding under our porch. They are under there because it is cold out and they are being protected from the wind. We are NOT feeding them, but I woke up this morning and there were 7 of them! I have called many places and they all say that either I can trap them myself and when I bring them in, they will put them down because they will not make good house pets, or they will get them fixed but release them back in the same area. Any ideas on who I can call or what to do? Thanks!

Cpinatsi.. I asked this question for assistance in helping these cats find a home INSTEAD of putting them down. I have no room in my place because I have a husband, a baby and two other cats. I didn't need your rude answer. I really don't want the cats to stay there because they are EXTREMELY loud and they wake me up. My cats are disturbed by them as well and cry out the window like crazy. I am also concerned because these cats may not have the proper shots, and I want my 16 month old to be able to go outside without worrying if any of the cats have rabies. Not everyone can take care of 10 cats at a time. How rude you are to judge!

I worked for a rescue for 2 years and here is what we did in this type of situation: If the cats that are living under your porch have had no human contact, they are feral. Feral cats are extrememly mean when trapped. No rescue (that I've heard of) would even attempt to take these in. You could try to see if you know anyone that knows anyone who lives on a farm and then see about trapping them, spaying/neutering through a rescue/humane society, the release them at the farm. Most people that live on farms don't mind the cats around, since they help with the mice population and don't mind living in the barn.

There should definately be some kind of NO KILL animal shelter in your area or surrounding area. The humane society sucks because they will tell you what they told you above "we will just put them down". Most no kills will not release a pet back into the area. They normally put them up for adoption. I will recommend this only as a last resort but some pet stores may be interested. I don't agree with using them but in desperate circumstances like these.

The best thing to do as well as being humane, is to TNR (trap-neuter-return) them. They make great rodent control. These poor kitties have been abandoned and reverted back to the wild. Animal control will only kill them and that is not right.
Go to: http://www.alleycat.org/orgs.html
There you will find a list of organizations that will help you with this. If they are young enough you can tame them and find homes for them.
I have helped many feral cat caretakers and they all have been very pleased with the results.

A few years ago, I found 5 stray kittens and found a no-kill shelter to take them to. I kept one for myself and it turned out to be one of the best pets I've ever had. So for them to tell you they wouldn't make good house pets is a bunch of crap!! You could either find a no-kill shelter to take them to or maybe a farm. Do you know someone who would like a pet? You could place an ad in your newspaper, too. But if you do that, you need to be careful who you give the cats to. Some labs that do animal testing pose as people who "want a cute kitten for my kid" and then take them to do torture on them. But whatever you decide to do, you really should feed them and give them fresh water or else they starve to death. The cold weather is hard enough on the. They need to survive.

What harm are they doing to you? They just find some shelter from the cold! Let them be, don't murder them. Don't feed them if you like, they'll probably find somewhere else at least when the weather is a little warmer. If I were you, I would just put some food out and let them be there and kill the rats for me!
Or ask that they be fixed and released again, that's the best thing to do for them so that they don't reproduce.

trap the cats and take them like 8-15 miles away from your house and release them back into the wild in some field near a farm

Contact your local animal control and they can set up humane traps to catch them. The only thing you can do to prevent stray cats is to encourage owners of other cats to sterilize their pets. That can cut down the strays, and then they wouldn't have to be put humanly down due to the fact that no one wants them. Good luck.

About all you can do is contact the local humane society or people in charge of animal control.
