He's 11 mos old and very 'hyper'. He loves people and we have lots of company. He gets wound even if I go out to start the car and when I come in he starts whipping that tail. I moved the table away from the back door because I think he whacked it on one of the table legs. I've been told he's too old to dock his tail and I'd rather not do that if I can avoid it. I tried taping it but he chewed the tape and I think it irritated the cut. He licks the cut, of course, but it's the whipping wagging that's the cause. I like the cayenne pepper idea. I'm just afraid it might burn the cut until I figure out just exactly where to place it to achieve the desired result. He's not in any pain as far as I can tell. He lets me look at the cut and clean it. He's just so dadburn happy 'hyper' and sociable. I pat him when I come in, when I go out, when I lie down, and all points in between. He just wags that tail like a whip, except when he's asleep.

Cropping a tail at 11 months is the same as an amputation. Try liquid bandage or have your vet try to put a stitch in it.

I have seen dogs like that before and have taped up the end of the tail. You might be able to stop it by patting him right away when you come in the house and he is happy to see you. Dogs wag for a while and then calm down. If ou don;t pat him he will wag until you do. He is trying to let you know how he feels about you.

My Great Dane did the same thing about 5 yrs ago at that time the vet said to put liquid band aid on it. Sounds like you need some training to calm down your dog some simple obedience classes should help.

I have a pit that did the same thing. I put some neo-sporin on it and put a Gauze pad at the end and taped it up really good with first aid tape so that it would stay on and it finally healed. You have to keep an eye on your dog though because he will want to eat it off. Good Luck...

Take him to the vet to see if there's a way to crop his tail. Poor thing must be in a lot of pain to have it bleeding all the time.

get to the vet-my associate had the same issue-he ended up cropping (shortening) the tail-this isn't cruel and made the dog and the owner happier
