The First Indochina War of 1946–54 Vietnam struggled for independence from France, Then we came in between 1954 and 1973. U.S. military advisors first became involved in Vietnam as early as 1950, when they began to assist French colonial forces.
And it technically, never was a real war, a Police action.

Pick your own start date. The US insinuated itself into Indochinese affairs gradually. There was a time when Ho Chi Minh was strongly pro-American, and the safest way to travel the countryside was to fly an American flag. Ho had reason to expect the Truman and Eisenhower administrations would support him, even when US military observers accompanied the French Foreign Legion in battle. Ike's Secretary of State, Dulles, developed some rather bizzare ideas about the threat of communism and pushed Ho into the communist camp, deciding to prop up the South Vietnamese government and not allow the 1954 elections which would have unified the country. Military advisors were needed, as the elections were almost universally wanted and the South Vietnamese government almost universally detested. Further deterioration during the Kennedy administration required more and more support to prop up the government, and eventually Johnson sent in an ever-escalating number of actual fighting troops (as opposed to advisors and a few special forces). One of the peculiarities of the time was that although we were propping up the government, the CIA managed a coup that led to the deposing and assassination of President Diem. So pick your enemy and your start date. You can't go too far wrong.
