An operating system is the basic software that is necessary to get the hardware (that is, the physical computer) to do anything at all. An application programme is a piece of software that allows you as an end user to do something with that computer that's useful to you.

To put it in other words: all (application) programmes do fundamentally very similar stuff: they output information to the screen, they store data on a hard disk, etc. If for every application programme the instructions to do all this generic stuff had to be written from scratch, application programmes would be huge, and a lot of the instructions would be the same in all application programmes.

Instead, these 'generic' instructions are included in the operating system, for all application programmes to use. The activities of
outputting information to the screen, or storing data on a hard disk, are now offered by the operating system, as a service to the application programmes that run on the operating system.

Hoe that helps...

Microsoft Windows XP is your operating system. It's what runs all your programmes on your computer. Much like Linux or other Operating Systems.

Microsoft Word is just a programme for making letters, typing up college work etc.

An operating system is the platform on which the computer runs. It controls functionality of the computer and manages hardware and peripherals.

An application, like MS word, runs on top of an operating system platform. It interacts with the operating system to provide extra functionality (like word processing, gaming, web browsing) not included with the operating system.

An Operating system is what is used to boot your computer and set it up so that it is able to run programs. If you did not have an OS (Windows or otherwise) your computer would simple set there and blink the C:> and not do anything.

Applications are program that you run inside the OS once the computer is started.

Think of it this way - You can run Windows without loading Word. But you can not run Word without loading Windows.

You can run an OS without loading an application. But you can not run an application without loading an OS.

Yay, stirring up some controversy. it quite is the hip-hop way. Lol in basic terms kidding. Umm technically conversing, there's a 2-letter large difference. yet heavily, imagine about this. A black guy is going as a lot as his white pal and says, "what's up my n*gga?". The white guy responds, "Chillin". What you're holding is that the black guy reported the white guy turned right into a n*gger...(and that is incorrect) So in a way, the be conscious has developed previous that's slang version of the be conscious n*gger and has now been used as a noun for someone, regardless of race. there'll continuously be those who don't love the be conscious getting used although that's been proliferated to the point that you won't be able to do a lot about it. And in basic terms remember this, i did not change the which technique of the be conscious, society did. what number songs(really rap songs) have used the be conscious?

It would have been nice if you used MS word to check your spelling. Anyway...WinXP, Linux, etc. are operating systems. They install base software and drivers so applications, like MS Word, can run on your computer.
