what are some of the reasons you have let people off with a warning when pulling them over? (AND BE HONEST the juicier the story the better!)

To me, it was all in the attitude of the offender; if the person acknowledged their offense, and appeared at least a little apologetic for it, and didnt yell, or curse, or make dumb comments ("Why are you out here writing citations for ____, when there are drug dealers on my street corner?"- simple answer- because people doing what you did generate enough complaints to the mayor, who yells at my chief, who yells at my lieutenant, who yells at my sergeant, who sends me out here to write these citations, when I was perfectly happy chasing drug dealers before) then I would usually just let them go with a verbal warning. But those with attitudes usually drove away holding the pink copy.

I'm not an L.E.O., but I've worked with a few the past six years. There are three main reasons I've heard for them giving warnings:

3. Occassionally I have heard that someone let someone off because they felt sorry for them. They were going to lose their license, or they had a car full of nutty kids, or were bawling their eyes out because they just got a divorce. This does not happen very often, but it happens. I mean, people try to convince cops this is happening all the time, but it usually does not work. Most police officers still give the ticket in this situation. It is the law, and they can get in trouble.

2. It really wasn't that bad of a thing the driver did, and they did not have a bad record. They pulled the person over, saw they had no tickets, believed it was an accident, and let them off. It was as simple as that. The purpose of the ticket is to deter people from breaking the law. If it really was an accident and the officer knows it, then there is really no real reason to give the ticket. Often an officer has no way to know the intentions of the driver, however, so this does not guarantee you won't get one!

1. They got another, more important call. You pull someone over. You go back to your car to run their information. The call comes in that there has been an accident or robbery. You give the person a warning and get back on the road to more important things.

That about sums it up. Fact of the matter is that most of the stories for this are really not that juicy, though I'm sure there are exceptions.

Honesty and Polite attitudes help you alot. Having all your paperwork in your car and ready to go helps too.

I once let off a female driver who told me she was not speeding and that she was only going 30MPH while pointing at the engine rev meter.

I knew she was lying but I had already started laughing so I decided she would get away with a warning. I have seen her around a few times since and she hasn't been speeding since.

Cute girls are so used to smiling, flashing their cleavage, and being flirty to get off of tickets that I now ALWAYS give tix to them. Also criers, and if you're giving the old 'I just came on my period' or 'I have to pee really bad!' excuses. And if you're a guy, forget about it!

If you're overweight, homely, and otherwise unattractive, you'll get warnings from me, because I figure that nobody ever cuts you a break! Just don't lie about knowing what you were doing or how fast you were going.

They rarely let people off with a warning because they start to write the violation when they see you. It is about getting the message across.

Not a law enforcement officer, but i once got out of a ticket by telling the officer, i really, really, really, had to pee (i did and acted like it). I pulled into the next gas station (cop behind me) and used the restroom and then waved at the cop as I left. he smiled and waved back.

I once dated a cop and she told me that she sometimes lets people off with a warning to avoid having to go to court. And then sometimes she encounters people with so many violations that she will just order them to go straight home because she otherwise would be stuck filing tons of paperwork.

Everybody I sopped got a citation. I figured the large signs up and down the road are warning enough.

My daughter, when she was in high school, got warnings twice from the same State Trooper. Both times she was speeding, returning from the lake and she and her girl friend were wearing bikinis.
