If you're talking about just airline tickets, then it is often cheaper to book them yourself, online, if you use good sources and shop around. BookingBuddy.com is probably the best, since it shops airline websites, Kayak and other "aggregators", airfare consolidators, and more sources, with just one input of your cities and dates.

I work for an airline it is definitely cheaper to get tickets online. Next best thing is to buy as far in advance as possible, travel agents are a rip off the airlines give them estimates of seats they think will not sale if you do go through a travel agency check online first print it out and tell them what the online price is and to match it.

Actually, the best airfares are probably through the airline's website I fly a lot for work and book a lot of travel. I usually check expedia.com or orbitz.com and see which airline has the cheapest flights, then i go to that airline's website, and 99% of the time I get the exact same airfare. Plus those sites all charge a "booking fee" of $5 or more so it actually makes it more expensive. And travel agents also charge fees. Plus some airlines guarantee that you will find the cheapest fares through their own website (I know American Airlines does this and probably most others). And it's also the most reliable to go through the source directly. Also check the "low-fare" carriers like Southwest Airlines or JetBlue because they only have their fares on their own websites so check there as well, although I never find those to be the cheapest.

You may be able to find deals that are offered on line that a travel agent or even the airline themselves cant offer.
BUT you give up the customer service that a travel agent offers.
If there is an error on the ticket, be it yours or the on-line service that you purchased it from, or if there is some unforeseen problem that develops such as sickness or uncontrollable change in plan, most on line discount tickets turn to toilet paper.
With a travel agent, you have someone who can negotiate the issue for you, and may be able to salvage a portion of the money you spent.
Basically, if you have any problem with a web purchased ticket, you have to "Talk to the box".

It really depends who has a bigger bargaining power with the airlines. The more bargaiing power, the cheaper the airfare, the travel agency / online agent will be able to offer to you.
