If you do not take steps to have the item removed from your credit report, the item will stay on your credit report for 7 or more years. However, you can have any item removed from your credit report at any time. There are 340 different ways to do this. You must have an understanding of the FCRA but it can be done. The easiest way to have it removed is to write a letter to the credit bureaus and dispute the item. Give specific reasons why you believe the item to be incorrectly reported. They have 30 days to "prove it or remove it". If it is a relatively recent account, you may have to do this several times comming up with a different reason that you think the account is incorrectly reported each time. This will go on until they tell you that it is a frivilous claim and they will not consider your requests any longer. This is why I always tell people to use a professional credit restoration company to do this kind of work. Once you get to the point where they refuse to work with you, you need a professional to get past those walls and take care of business for you.
As I caution all people who want to use a credit restoration company, DO YOUR DUE DILLIGENCE! There are ONLY THREE legitimate credit restoration companies currently in the United States. Keep looking until you find one of them (or just email me and I will tell you who they are.) Fixing your credit on your own is like trying to repair your car with a "Car Repair For Dummies" book. You will only have limited success. That is why there are professionals.

Im not exactly sure what you mean... do you mean like paying a bill that went into collection? Or paying down a credit card balance?

Paying your credit cards down should make your score go up instantly, although not nessacarily by very much. Paying off old collections will take a lot longer to reflect because that can take really hurt your score..

If you mean like an old overdue credit card or a collection, it takes 7 years from the date it was originally reported.

Pay it in full and then dispute it w/all three bureaus. At the least it will be updated as paid (which doesn't hurt quite as much) but if you're lucky the collection company wont respond and you can get it deleted.

It depends what you are talking about. A payment won't be posted until your payment is received and manually posted to your account. This may take as long as a week or so. If you are talking about returns it could be immediate or as long as several days. Holds are placed on your account when you buy something. These holds can dissappear when the purchase is concluded or as much as ten days later.
