Have you ever flown in a helicopter, when and why?

YES have been a helicopter 4 times. The first time was when I was being sent by medical helicopter as a patient from one hospital to another. I was very young (in my teens).

The other two times were as a paramedic (my job). I trained and spent a day observing once, took a patient to a hospital in a military helicopter once, and one of my co-workers who worked also for an air-flight service took us all up one day on a ride when they were needing to fly a new chopper that they had just gotten in.

Back in the summer of 1979 when I was 18, the British Royal Navy ran a recruiting exercise called "Sons at Sea", under which the sons of serving ratings and officers could join a ship while on it was on exercises for up to 2 weeks. The idea was that you would work in all different departments of the ship during this time, fall in love with life at sea and join the navy.

My Father was on board HMS Hermes at the time and so I signed up for Sons at Sea. I was flown by helicopter (Wessex Whirlwind) from a naval land base to the ship (an aircraft carrier) as it steamed down the English Channel and I had several other helicopter rides (in Sea Kings) during the exercises, which took us from Portsmouth, UK to Mayport, Florida over the next 2 weeks.

Those were the days ...

I never joined the navy but I did join the army in 1983!

Yes, when I was 27 years old and the Doctors gave me phenobarbital for my epilepsy. Well, I am allergic to it and I went into respiratory depression (I stopped breathing) and I had to be helicoptered out to Phx Hospital. Fun ride huh?

Yes...on our vacation in Hawaii we did a helicopter tour of the islands.

Yes. I was being recruited for the Marine Corps and visited an air base.

I'd prefer not to do it again.
