This is not my opinion, but I'm interested in what you think. I wonder what kind of a movement there might be to get rid of religion. Would it matter to you if religion was banned?

Read the book of Daniel in the Old Testament. That should give you an idea of the kinds of things that would happen.

I'm struggling with a similar question today. What benefit do religions have in modern life? It started with the reading of an article on atheism and listening to part of an audio book on the same topic (pretty much all the important points were made at the beginning :)

My personal view is that no, religions should not be banned. Telling people what to think won't work anyway.

The problem (In my opinion. Everything I say is only that, my opinion) with religion is that many, particularly the current popular ones, are intolerant of other ways of thinking or acting.

Banning religion is being just as intolerant.

I think it would matter very much to me as religion encompasses a wide variety of thoughts and literature. Do you want to ban simply the religions that are intolerant? Or do you want to ban all knowledge and thought of anything spiritual? Anything beyond the physical?

The path to the truth, to knowledge, is by letting knowledge itself exist. When our ideas and opinions come into conflict with other opinions and ideas, we question both and in that way we grow. Every piece of information is a part of our lives, our heritage and our future.

I feel that to ban religion completely, simply religion or all spiritual matters, is not only impossible (people will rebel, meet in secret, continue to spread their ideas) but it's detrimental to society.

I don't know what the solution is to stopping the conflict that religions bring about. I have no doubt that if we didn't have religion to fight about, we would find something else to fight over.

The word religion simply means following rules or beliefs. Atheism, Agnosticism are in a sense religions. How would you ban all thought? (Sounds like 1984 or Brave New World)
Jesus wanted to get rid of religion...not by banning it but by persuading people to abandon 'rtules' and follow Him

Some Religion stem from bad Philosophies. Never the less Human tend to want having a freedom to breath. Good or bad man needs to make his own choices.
So if you banned a religion because you dont like it its like asking humans to stop breahting.
In the same manner religion cannot be injected by a group of people to others by force.

Yes. It's like saying ban driving because some do it dangerously. People would not ask such questions if they took a brief look at the holy books. They would see that those who cause such questions are morons being manipulated by hypocrites. Is there anything else to encourage people to make an effort with themselves?

Threat to health would be a hard one to prove, a lot of religions like mine show stats of members living 8 years longer than the general population.

As far as a threat to security - that only applies to the radical violent groups, not the majority of religions...and aren't those violent ones (or at least their violent behavior) already illegal? What's left to ban for securities sake?

If religion was banned, I would be SO happy! But I don't see it happening, as too many people have been brainwashed for far too long that, short of lobotomising the lot of them, I don't see many of them seeing the truth now.

Well, if you tried to do this it would create a war and whatever authority did this would have to be a police state and execute anyone who held beliefs, it would mean our leaders would do the things the religions were blamed for in the first place

A person like YOU should hire a team of Lawyers, working on Contingency fees, to begin an appropriate Legal Action!

Your success or failure would finally stop these silly questions like;
Should we ban religions?

Should we Outlaw islamic thought?

Should we ship all muslims back to Saudi Arabia, etc. etc.??????
