What is the procedure to tell a family that their child/spouse died in war? Is this when someone from the military just shows up on the doorstep? do they present a flag? Is it different depending on the rank of the soldier?

This is the procedure that the Army uses.

If your soldier is killed, a soldier in dress uniform will come to your door between the hours of 6 am and 10 pm. They will never come in the middle of the night. The soldier will be at least the rank of Staff Sergeant (if your soldier is enlisted) or Captain (if your soldier is an officer) and will outrank the deceased soldier. They will also often have a chaplain with them. I think the line they say is something along the lines "On behalf of the United States Army, I regret to inform you that ____________ has been killed in the line of duty." They will then come in, if you invite them, and explain to you what happened to the best of their knowledge. They will also give you information on how to proceed with the arrangements. The flag is not presented until the funeral.

At my husband's duty station, they also have a team of wives who are trained to help out in this situation. If you want, they will call them and they come to your house and help you out as long as you need. Cooking, babysitting, answering the phone, whatever you need.

I'm not sure how the other branches do it, but I'm sure it is similar.
