A city in Syria.

St Paul was on the road to Damascus when Jesus revealed himself to him and turned his life around. So "road to Damascus" is shorthand for some life-changing religious event.

the apostle Paul was formerly Saul, a persecutor of christians. on the road to Damascus, the Lord smote him blind, and then showed him the "true" way. So "Saul on the road to Damascus" means being shown what the person showing believes is a true way to salvation.
