Strong enough as all the military forces of the US are now tied down and the Iranians are steadily modernizing there air defenses with the Russian version of Patriot missile system. They also have been buying new fighters to replace there old planes and make some planes of there own. The missile inventory is getting better especially the importation of new cruise missile similar to the Tomahawk. The missile is a Chinese made copy of a Russian missile. The second type of cruise missile to enter Iranian service the 1st was Silkworm missile a copy of the Russian Styx missile. These weapons won't stop the American military but can stop the political leadership as they can and would destroy all the Oil refineries in the gulf region this threat would stop most rational minds in there tracks. However Bush isn't rational as his track record for war suggest.

The Iranians witnessed the events on the first days of the Iraq War. Since that time, they had been carefully planning and preparing their defenses to avoid the same mistakes as Iraq had. So, they know what to expect and are much better prepared to meet such challenges.

Iranian soldiers are very nationalistic, unlike the corrupt Iraqi soldiers who immediately threw away their weapons when the chance arised. Saddam was a corrupt brutal dictator who founded his army on nepotism and political loyalyties and affiliations. All of Saddam's government deputies and military commanders were his relatives, cronies, and supporters of his Ba'ath Party. Ahmadinejad was democratically elected and his army is fanatically loyal to his nation. The Iranians, no matter how many of them hated Ahmadinejad, will undoubtedly rally their full support for him once their country is attacked.

Militarily, the U.S. is much superior than Iran. However, the U.S. will be embroiled in a war many times worse than Iraq.

In short, never under-estimate Iran. Remember Bush's "mission accomplished" statement eight weeks after the Iraq invasion?. Well, American troops are still stuck in the Iraq quagmire, and nobody can tell when it will end.

About 500,000 warriors, of which approx 200,000 will be conscripts. Approx 1500 tanks, mostly old T54s, with 450 T72s, about 100 British Chieftain, and some US M47 and M48 Pattons, some M60s and some Chinese tanks. Not a huge amount of Armoured Personnel Carriers, some elderly Russian , USand British SAMs, a mixed bag of artillery (with concomitant logistics problems). Huge numbers of anti-aircraft guns, that are useless as Precision Guided Missiles/smart bombs can be released from altitudes above those at which AAGs are effective. 50 US attack helicopters.

The Air Force does have about 25 US F14s - still potent, but serviceability is doubtful. Other fighters include Phantoms (65, useful for ground-attack) and a score or so of Mig 29s. Northrop F5s and Mirage F1s make up the remainder of the interceptor force. (80 airframes).

Navy. 3 old Soviet subs, 3 frigates and 10 missile craft.

Also, a large number of inaccurate Scuds and similar.

I dare say that I could organise this motley force into something that approaches lethality, but I don't have a lot of faith in the Iranian Officer Corps. The basic soldier wil fight like hell, but how good is their training? What of force multipliers - radar systems, mortar targetting radars such as Cymbeline. How good is their Command, Control and Communications infrastructure?

A US Carrier group will make mincemeat of the air force. However, you will need another US/UK/Arab coalition, like in the first Gulf War, to deal with the ground troops, although the US air-power should be able to dispose of most of the armour without too much bother.

In short, impressive on paper, but peobebly an immense ****-up waiting to happen if a First World coalition makes war.

Would I be correct in assuming you are a WASP or live in the West and are Caucasian? If so, and your question is posed in order to determine whether Iran has the capability in arms & equipment to defend itself against a takeover by America, then the answer is, no it does not.

However, as we have seen in the past, quality and quantity of arms & equipment are no guarantee a country will win a war. I would say the strength of Iran is huge. Perhaps not in the arms or equipment it possesses but in the courage and determination of its army and even more so by its Islamist fundamentalist mentality. Should any country be foolish, naïve, arrogant or plain stupid to invade Iran that country may as well sign its own death warrant.

As we have seen, modern warfare is conducted via satellite-guided cruise missiles. B52 bombers flying at such an altitude they are barely visible. F-16 fighter jets, gunship helicopters and a whole array of weaponry.

Then on the other side of all this modern state of the art weaponry, we have roadside bombs, subway trains, public transport, suicide bombers and god knows what else a determined and aggrieved soldier, freedom fighter or terrorist will do.

A fundamentalist Iranian will not only engage the invader on the battlefields of Iran but on the streets of the country, which invades it.

Fairly weak over the short term. That actually works to Iran's advantage since everyone is a soldier and part of the infrastructure, the U.S. would have to kill every Iranian. That would be politically unacceptable.
