There are no contemporary studies that indicate cousins have children with significantly higher than normal birth defects. Fears of cousins who marry having children with birth defects are indeed exaggerated. Simply marrying within your own race increases the odds of birth defects. Marrying within your own town further increases your chances. Cousin couples have only a slightly higher incidence of birth defects than non-related couples.

Fact: 26 states allow first cousin marriages; Most people can marry their cousin in the US.

If you are young and believe you are in love with your first cousin please don't do anything without thinking carefully first. Marrying a relative may cause problems in your families that can never be resolved. Remember, making this kind of decision will affect your entire life and many people who love you both.

To answer your question: Check the laws for each state. *I believe the main concern with relatives marrying is not because the baby will positively be "retarded" or "deformed" but because genes which are passed down may cause some medical traits and tendencies to be inherited.* Two examples are dwarfism or Parkinson's disease. Relatives are more likely to pass on these genes because they both have similar gene pools.

My personal belief is that is morally wrong and a therapist is more in order than a priest. Also if you are basing the acceptance on your marriage due to infertility that is way too much of a grey area. There are many babies born that were supposed to be impossible to conceive. People have even gotten pregnant after a vesctomy or tubal ligation. I was told I absolutely couldn't conceive a baby without IVF and yet my son was conceived anyway. It happens.

Yes, some states allow first cousins to marry, the child bearing aspect has nothing to do with it. Do a google search.

Only in a couple states does the law allow first cousins to marry. Dear Abby told which ones once. You'll have to look it up. I wonder if you do that, will it be legal in your state when you get back? Assuming you have to go to another one to do it.

It depends on the state. I think you actually can get married to your first cousin (regardless of children) in Mass.

You can look into it; go to you're state's website. Or, I found this website: http://www.mass.gov/Eeohhs2/docs/dph/vital_records/impediment.pdf
It's a list of who can't marry, legally, by state.

I think you need to get out of Dodge for a while and go seek your fortune somewhere else.
this place doesn't sound like a good place to be.
Even previewing a thought like that, you must realize is not the norm, so people are going to give you flack,
I think I'd jump on a bus and head out of there lickety split.....
You can meet a complete stranger and marry them, it would be more appropriate, acceptable and safer.....

No, even if you don't have children. It's just not meant to be. If you are inlove with your cousin, I suggest you move far away.
