Anything the uses sun light and water to perform photosynthesis will absorb carbon dioxide. This includes trees and all other plants such as vines, shrubs, weeds, ferns, and so on. Also as mentioned algae are included as well as diatoms and plankton and so on. However, when a plant absorbs the carbon dioxide as a gas since matter in neither created nor destroyed is can only change from one form to another, what happens is the carbon dioxide is changed from gas form to a solid form of carbon in the plants leaves, roots, stems, or whatever. Then when the plant dies the carbon now in solid form is attacked by bacteria that decompose the plant or other photosynthetic organism, and it is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide all over again. It is part of the carbon cycle.

Oceanic diatoms (microscopic plant life) create about 2/3 of the oxygen you are currently breathing.
