I don't really care, I'm not a germaphobic. I'll hover usually -heck, half the time I hover at home, if I only gotta pee, it's fast- but even if I gotta sit I don't really worry about it, I trust my skin to keep stuff out & my system to deal with anything that does get through the defenses. I wash my hands and if the place is very gross I try not to touch the doorknob on my way out. I'm rarely if ever sick so it seems to be fine. :)

It would be rude to tell a strange this, however I think it to...I have a process for avoiding the whole yuckyness of it. This is how I do it, I use four paper towels in the hand washing process: to turn on the tap, to get the soap, turn off the tap and the last one to dry my hands and open the door. I limit my public bathroom usage so my one trip is the equivalent to four uses. I once had someone asked why I used a paper towel to open the door, I told her, "because I washed my hands after I go to the bathroom, I noticed you didn't. We are in restaurant and I am going to eat my lunch, I don't want to eat whatever you missed when you wiped by touching the door handle..." Needless to say, I didn't make a friend, but got my point across.

I don't use public restrooms much, but not because I'm afraid of germs. It's partly because I simply prefer my privacy, but there are also times when a public toilet is so dirty that it's literally the uncleanliness I can actually see that turns me off. When I'm away from home I do the best I can, but I think that a lot of public places could stand to take better care of their restrooms.

I'm not terribly worried about germs from toilet seats, unless women leave um, drippings on the seat. Then I'll find another stall. And I only use the paper seat covers in an airport. I don't know why I make that distinction. Wash your hands and all's well.

The nicer the place, the cleaner the restrooms. So, I try to avoid mall restrooms and service stations. But in a nice restaurant, they are usually spotless. But... I do have issues with hotels, even four and five star hotels. How often do you think they clean that bedspread.... and how often have you lain on it without thinking about what may have gone on there a few hours earlier. One of the news programs analyzed a hotel bedspread from a NYC five star hotel. What they found was disgusting... including feces among other bodily fluids.

I'm pretty averse to public restrooms, but when you've gotta go, you've gotta go. I wad up tons of toilet paper to wipe the seat down, then I layer toilet-seat covers or toilet paper so I can sit. I can't squat when I do my business. Then I wash my hands pretty liberally and use hand sanitizer.

Restaurants are usually pretty clean so that's OK, if not, I go to a different one, but rest areas when I travel is a different thing. I carry a small can of Lysol and spray good around the toilet before going.

Fortunately in the UK our public toilets are kept clean enough and we don't have such a phobia about germs so as NOT to use them as and when the need occurs. Obviously the American ones aren't kept so clean, judging by your remarks.

I always put one of those papers on the seat if there is one, or I'll use toilet paper on the seat, or I wont even sit on it. I hate public bathrooms, because theyre usually filthy. Full of germs. I always, always wash my hands too. Its a must!*
