Invite them to a pot luck lunchon or dinner. That is where everyone brings a dish. You usually supply the meat and tea, soda ect. and they bring the rest. You can even divide the alphabet up so that people who's last name begins with a-l bring a salad and m-r bring a side dish and the rest bring a desert or something to that affect so you have the entire meal covered.

That's to many people for a 1 yr old party. Your the one throwing the party. If money is a factor then maybe you should re-think the party. The only people you should be concerned about feeding are the kids, which you should limit to about 10 or 12. Your not trying to get them full, just enough to say I had a great time. If your focusing on the kids 1 yr old are easy to please. Hot dogs, chips, juice, and ice cream. (besides cake or cupcakes.) I don't think I could have a party and ask for food donations unless it was all family. Most people will be like if I have to bring food, I'm not getting a gift. Good Luck!!!

In my family, we just invited people over for cake and coffee. The parties were usually at around 2:00 in the afternoon, (or as we got older, 7:00 in the evening). This way it was after lunch. My mom would put out a few bowls of chips or pretzels, and then bought a large sheet cake. The invitation would read something like "Come to celebrate baby's first birthday by having cake and coffee with us". Since it said just for cake and coffee, everyone would leave before dinner.

The easiest way to do something like that is if you're inviting any family just ask them first. If they can't and you have friends coming then what you should put on the invitations is something along the lines of like a pot luck birthday party where everyone brings something differentIt's also a good way to try new foods and it's fun and it makes everyone feel like they are getting to participate in the childs very first birthday.

make it like "Potluck Birthday for Kids" or something...
where everyone brings food,
give suggestions in the invitation
by stating potluck, it doesnt sound like you are begging, it simply says "this is a birthday party that is potluck. you bring a plate, let everyone experience your recipe"
i can say i LOVE potlucks, and im sure a lot of others do too, because despite the fact you're celebrating your child's birthday party, it's also a chance for other parents to bring dishes that they are hoping will get compliments. every parent loves a compliment or two, and cooking hits the spot with moms :)

you can ask everyone to bring a covered dish... bring your favorite food ...as parents are welcome to join the festivities ask for response as to what they would like to bring make sure you keep track of everything so you don't have an over load of macaroni salad !! most people will be glad to help out and it sounds like a chance to have adults mingle and make new friends while kids have fun at your sons B-Day party

Its called a pot luck, but I think its corny for a 1 year olds birthday. All you need is Birthday cake, Ice cream, Hot Dogs & Chips. Its a birthday party not Thanksgiving. Trust me Ive been there a few times

Just write 'please bring a plate'.
It works for older people, so why not for a child's party?
