People hurt themselves to mask the pain that they feel inside. Often abuse is a trigger for cutting. But not all the time. The pain inside you feel is sooo intense and so strong that your body has to release it some how. Cutting releases endorphins and helps the person feel more at ease. IT is suggested that these people learn other methods to release endorphins and under a therapists care.
Now, I am starting to see a disturbing trend of people doing it because they are looking for an identity. They want to belong.
Cutting is a serious issue and should not be glamorized. People suffering with self injury need compassionate support and professional help. Most people who cut themselves can be the sweetest people in the world. They harbor their hate toward themselves and that is self destructive and they need help to love themselves again.
Hope this helps.

I used to be a cutter and have often thought about it since. The best way i can describe the feeling a self harmer can get from cutting or any form of self mutilation is relief. It is hard to explain but i will try my best it is like someone opening an airtight bag which would then release the pressure. This is generally how a self harmer feels. It also has a lot to do with focusing on something else with blood they are focusing on the bleeding and so occupying their mind away from whatever their issues are. Hope this helps.

Some people do this thinking it will help with the emotional problems they are having by taking the pain away from them thinking of them. But in reality it is just causing them to have a cut to take care of still leaving the emotional problem there put on hold and now possibly having a scar to remind them of trying to forget that problem. People do not realize that they need to talk things over and come to the reasoning of the problem and get it over and dealt with. There is nothing that should be kept inside of a person making them feel so terrible that they should have to harm themselves in anyway. We are all human and can have our own thoughts, people need to understand and accept that. This is my Opinion and my theory! No harm meant to anyone!

Two of the major reasons:
To materialize the pain. They are so emotionally devasted and don't konw how to handle. If they cut themselves they can see the pain. They can wash away the blood.
The other reason is stress relief. Similar to above. Some people get so stressed and bottle it up. The don't really know how to deal with stress and have to let it out somehow. When they cut themselves it releases adreniline and other hormones.

There's a multitude of psychological and psychiatric effects that can cause self-harm, and it really depends on the person. In some way or another, it will make the person feel better about their current situation, or in some cases, perpetuate a bad situation, because of a psychological comfort zone that they have.
If you're looking for a logical reason for a healthy person to do so, you won't find it, because it doesn't exist. It simply is the effect of improper parenting, or a rather severe chemical imbalance . . . or both. Often both, in fact.

I used to be a big cutter. It was cuz I would get a panic attack from think that someone was going to break in and hurt me (which had happened when I was young) I was so intensly scared of them hurting me, that I would hurt myself to get over the fear. Because I'm already doing something that I feared them doing. Also because when I was sad, or felt like I failed, it was like I punished myself.
I went and got help and therapy, still am, and it helped a lot to realize why I did certain things.
I think we cut because that is the only rational thing to do in our mind during that un-sound state of mind.

It has to do with releasing the pain from the inside out, sort of. It has the same roots as any other addiction, such as alcoholism or drugs. The pain inside is so bad that you medicate it somehow, and cutters use the pain of the OUTside to do that instead of alcohol or drugs or gambling or food. It can take intensive counseling and preserverence to get past that urge.

Those people who think that self harmers are just seeking attention or crazy are WRONG!!!!! I used to self harm and sometimes I still do when I feel that I can't cope with things. When I cut myself I feel that I'm releasing all the anger, sadness and confusion in my head. Some people eat when they feel down, others smoke or drink to cope. Self harm is just the same.
You have to be there to understand it.
