Sure, alot of girls do it all the time. Though, I'm sort of old-fashioned and I prefer the boy to ask me out.

It depends on your main purpose. If you want to ask him out just to spend time together at the nearest malls or parks ~ that should not be a big problem.
However, if you want to start a serious relationship with him, let's consider several things that you've to check out.
1) His perspective towards girls: If you've heard him whining about girls before -- try to ask him questions that will show his view on it. After further the discussion, you can actually sense which category this guy belongs to ~ on whether he's a male chauvinist, conservative, open-minded, etc.
2) His preferences: Try to ask him in more relaxing way and even joking with him about his preferences. If you fear of rejection or failure or something related to this, get a close male buddy to ask him this question. Find his personal preferences out will lead you to getting higher chance of being his date!
3) Observe on his love life record ~ check the list of girls that he's been dated before -- it'll help you to understand him better!

Sure, Nana...why not? But do understand that he may not be interested and want to say no but be afraid of hurting your feelings. If he does accept, don't expect him to instantly become your boyfriend, worship the ground you walk on and never look at another for the rest of his life.
