He is 6 yrs. old. Any suggestions on how to get him to do this (the smell permeates the house and it is foul!!!)

Personally, I'd be thankful the droppings are simply IN the litterbox. You won't be able to force your cat to cover it.
One solution could be to purchase one of those automated litterboxes that clean the box after your cats exit. I have one and it makes maintaining my box easier.

If it's a new phenomenon, I would talk to the vet. The cat may be trying to leave evidence of a medical condition. My cat (who lived to be 21 years old) used to hop up on the white bathroom sink to pee when she had an infection (which she started getting somewhere in the same age range as your cat) so we could see the blood and/or discoloration and take her to the vet. Otherwise, she used the litter box for number two and the toilet for number one.

I have 3 cats now.... the oldest one will cover her pee but not her stinkys as I call them. I am lucky that I work from home so when I see her going I just put her back into the box, tell her to cover her stinkys and she does. Now this only started happening since she gained weight, she always did it ok before. Did your cat gain any weight, that could be a factor too. Anytime you are home, just put him back in the box, he will smell his stuff and should cover it,,, if not,, take his paws gently and make him do it.... this happens sometimes so don't dispair, he might get over it and start covering again.

I HAVE 2 GROWN CATS .ONE COVERS HER POO'AND THE OTHER ONE POO'S AND LEAVES IT,MY OTHER CAT GOES AND COVERS HER SISTERS POO.NOW IF SHE COULD ONLY START PEEING IN THE LITTER I WOULD BE OH SO HAPPY......THANK GOD FOR NATURES SECRET....GOOD LUCK
