I would get it checked out. You can do this by taking it to a dealer and have them run a test on it. If everything checks out ok. They can reset it so the light goes off.
Take it to Autozone or one of the parts shop. Most of them have testers. It usually doesnt cost anything if you take it to Autozone. I dont know about other places.

you have to bring it to a DEALER to have them diagnos the problem $79.00
they'll tell you it is a sensor of some sort $155.94
then they'll tell you that the labor is: $271.23
OR
a small piece of black electrical tape strategically placed over the engine light : $PRICELESS
Seriously though if the light is on the car wont pass emissions, it is an automatic fail, and the longer that you drive with the light on the more damage to other components that could occure.
for instance if the oxygen sensor is bad and it could cause the engine to run rich in turn fouling the catylitic converter (about $500) to repair vs a $55 sensor. Go to the dealer.

You will need to have the code or codes pulled from the PCM with a scan tool. I bet you are going to come up with a code P0401, or 402. Most common on that truck is the DPFE sensor( for the egr flow) 99% of time light will be on when it gets out of range, but no complaints of how it runs.

To reset the check engine light remove the positive battery terminal for a few seconds. the light should reset. i had the same fault on mine, the light came on after leaving the vehicle ildeling for awhile, this causes the emission control sensor to overheat and brings on the light. If there is a problem with any of the sensors it will simply come back on.

Go to auto parts store, they have a diagnostic reader you plug into your car's computer socket (usually located under the dash). Plug it in, read the codes, look up the code meaning(s) & discuss with the parts people and/or your mechanic. Common causes include oil blow-by, some sensor (fuel, oxygen, or other) needs to be replaced, dirty air filter.

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS. TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE. LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

Take it to your local auto store, they will sca your computer with an OBDII code reader..... then they will tell you what you need to replace. On my 98 Explorer I had to replace the EGR postion sensor and 2 oxygen sensors.... now my Explorer runs like new ..... Im very happy with my FORD!! :) :) :)
