it was fine a while ago....weird
can anyone simply explain how to turn the sound device on

That happened to me a few times, I just shut down, and everything came back. Sometimes you may have too many programs, and one might conflict with another which will cause your problem to happen.
If you tryed that, Then goto the "windows update" and let it run a scan on your system, If it finds damaged sound files, It will fix them for you. Good luck!

Try doing a system restore if it was working recently. Be careful as it may stop any newly installed software from working and would need reinstalling

When it is plugged in, it should automatically be detected. If you are using Windows XP, there should be no problem but if you are using Windows 98, get up to date and buy XP lol
