Something I've always wondered. Western etiquette taught us that it is inpolite to burp after a meal. This stand in contrast with many eastern cultures(arab, japanese) who actually consider it to be a sign of appreciation of a good meal. And let's be honest it's a purely natural digestive reaction to let out excess gas. So why do we consider this to inpolite and when and how did we come to this etiquette rule. quite curious to find the right answer.

When i find people staring at me angrily i just say " Excuse me for burping, my butt wasn't working". See what faces they make then!
I mean come on as long as you cover your mouth it shouldn't be rude, unless of course you're completing the alphabet lol.
It's natural just like yawning can't control just always cover the mouth.
Enjoy your burps i say, they feel good lol.

Considering it impolite or not is a part of culture:
A British gentleman was visiting a German family who had just moved in, and was invited to dinner.
After eating, the man erupted with a loud, long burp.
The Englishman asked, "Do you always burp before the children?'
No, replied the German, "Sometimes they go first."
[In some countries, a burp compliments the cook!]

P.S. As was noted, a small, closed mouth burp is more acceptable, but they can still stink like a polluted river's bank muck.

LOL, you should see the Arabian culture then... when you burp there means you respect and appreciate the cook. means you enjoyed the food well. And they truly appreciate you for your burping.
You really cannot say that burping is damn wrong. Because burping for some cultures in this world is considered as a grateful attitude. Even if you are not burping after eating then you will be considered as a rude and impolite there.

Because the East thinks it shows the meal was good. The West was better educated and realized that wasn't the case. To be fair the East is a far older culture.

I dont think its rude to simply burp after a meal, because like you said it is a natural thing our body does after eating, BUT to burp loud, without covering our mouths, is when it becomes rude. To me, thats just commom sense.*

My husband burps after a meal quite often and we do get some looks from time to time... He always says......NOT BAD MANNERS... JUST REALLY GOOD FOOD!.

Burping is gross and sometimes it stinks. I know there are cultures where its acceptable or even the rule but I am glad I dont belong to any of them.

burping out of your mouth is still probably more polite than burping out your butt, if you know what i mean
