It's a mixture of animal habitat and ancient Indian ways. If you read Jean Auel, in The Plains of Passage, she gives a very good description of the Steppes, and how they came to be. The Great Plains have much in common with them.

No that is why they are called the great plains ,if there were a lot of trees ,it would be called forrests
