Generally regarded as being the most miserable town in Scotland, Aberdeen is predominately constructed from grey granite which gives the place a depressing air.

The natives are notoriously small minded and inward looking. They - somewhat notoriously- think the world stops at Stonehaven.

Aberdeen is cold, and the prevailing weather is freezing rain. You approach this provincial town over a dilapidated mediaeval bridge, and its traffic jams are legendary.

They only have one shopping street ( Union Street) and the prices are generally 10% higher than in the rest of Scotland.

What I will say, is that many people move to Aberdeen and make a pleasant life for themselves. There are many pleasant people in Aberdeen. But the native Aberdonians tend to resent them, referring to them as "inaboot comers".

It depends where you live. There are very nice parts of the city and there are parts you would want to keep you car windows up and doors locked as you are driving through.

If you are thinking of moving here then property prices are still rising steeply but compared to Edinburgh or Glasgow still not bad. Its good value compared to the South of England though.

There are plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs. Because it is an oil city there is a cosmopolitan feel to the people with many different languages being heard on the streets.

As a rule summers are not great. The sea mist (or harr) quickly moving in causing grey skies. This linked to the grey granite of many of the buildings, all next to a grey sea can make the place somewhat, er, grey! And occasionally depressing. Inland from the coast gets a better deal.

What else? There is not much in terms of high culture but there is a choice of cinemas (including a very nice art-house one called the Belmont). Plenty of live music in the Lemon Tree and sometimes elsewhere but better Edinburgh or even Glasgow for that.

There is a good range of sport locally, but golf is king up here. That and supporting The Dons if football is your thing.

That's it as an introduction. If you have any specific questions you can e-mail me.

I hate Aberdeen city, it is so crowded, but, outside the city, there are lovely warm people, beautiful countryside, interesting places to visit and glorious beaches. I live 50mls north of Aberdeen, right on the coast, and I wouldn't like to live anywhere else. I consider myself lucky to live in such a beautiful place.
