I've never met a squeamish dentist, and don't think I ever will. Before you venture into this profession, I might suggest that you research and possibly observe your dentist for a day with various procedures. It's done quiet often with students who think they may want to pursue a career in dentistry. Some times students find prestige and allure in the title and money, but most dentist work very hard for their money and have earned their degree by the more difficult and the hygiene lacking patients that they treat. There is no doubt about it though, if you want to be a dentist or even work in the field of dentistry, you have to work in peoples mouths with your hands and scrape a little (sometimes a lot more than a little plaque!) plaque off of teeth. The drilling is the easy part, just requires their knowledge, talents and technique. As for "bad bits" about dentistry there are more than a few. A person really has to want to do this type of work, it requires skills, extensive training and medical knowledge, managerial training, people skills and psychology along with an artistic talent and the main thing is the desire. I can't stress the later enough. So anyone who tells you it's an easy job doesn't know what they are talking about, just ask your dentist. Hope I've been of some help today and good luck!

Well, many people have jobs that appear disgusting to others. In 4 years of study in dental school, students learn to deal with the "disgusting" side of patients. Since the mid-80s, dentists have routinely used latex gloves and masks when treating patients. Besides providing infection protection for both doctor and patient, it no doubt has some positive aspect when "working" in a patient's mouth. The benefits of dentistry, however, far outweigh the negatives, i.e. control of your working hours, providing an important health service to the community, excellent income, making people happy by improving their health and appearance. Finally, I can think of several other health professions, and other jobs, that have their "disgusting" aspects, but people join them anyway. Don't think I'd want to be a plumber or a mortician!

If you were a dentist obviously you wouldnt mind! Becoming a dentist requires school and in school I'm pretty sure they let you know what you're getting into! lol
I could never be a dentist...some people have some disgusting mouths!! I hate the noise of the drill itself!
