I can't say for Portuguese speakers, but I have noticed that Spanish is spoken at a generally higher pitch than English. Perhaps you have mistaken a higher pitch for higher volume.

Really?? That is just pure stereotyping, so you are saying that ALL Spanish and Portuguese people are loud? You can find loud people everywhere, regardless of their ethnicity.

We don't speak so loud at every moment of day (I'm Spanish), think that the images that you receive from here are linked to holidays and festivities, but we don't act in that way every day. Of course, there're some social groups that are noisier, in general low classes, but I think it exists in all cultures.

I heard it was because they were taught this way so that everybody can hear them. But from my experience, only the middle class speaks like that. More spanish than portuguese though...

Yeah, I live in Portugal and it's deafening!
What a ridiculous generalization!
Most people I know here are very soft spoken.
Have you heard the Dutch? It's like they're using pneumatic drills!

They don't, they speak with a lot more passion and movement sometimes, but in general I have never noticed anyone in Spain or Portugal speaking loudly.

Maybe you speak quietly ?

I never noticed that. Maybe you don't understand what they're saying so it sounds louder to you. I doubt they speak louder than people from Brooklyn.

I think this happens also with other latin languages. Italians, for example, speak louder then any other people.

I've never understood why, but all the Mediterranean people speak loudly, I guess most are hot blooded and extraverts...lol
