Seriously, why on earth do people do it? They taste revolting, have had all nutritional value removed and aren't even time saving. Surely, people are not so lazy that they can't slice a couple of fresh mushrooms. Does anyone out there have a rational explanation?

OK, so far:

Good reasons to eat tinned mushrooms:
1) You live in the middle of nowhere and can't get fresh veg very often.
2) You're elderly and can't get to the shops easily / regularly.

Bad excuses for eating tinned mushrooms:
1) You like the taste (seriously?!)
2) You have a mushroom emergency and can't live without mushrooms in your casserole (make something else).
3) Fresh mushrooms have no nutritional value anyway (not true).
4) To save time (?)

I spend quite a lot of time on the recipe pages, and it's shocking how many people put up recipes which include them. I must say though that it seems to be a very American thing.....

I've never tried them so I can't comment. The thought alone makes me feel ill. I've never understood smash - what's so difficult about mashing your own spuds??

I agree with all that you have said about tinned mushrooms, but what about elderly people who cannot get out very much, especially when there is bad, snowy weather - a tin in the cupboard may enable them to add a tinned vegetable to a casserole or something if they haven't got the fresh product?

Personally, I think all store bought canned veg are disgusting. All of the natural flavors have been replaced with salt, the veg are usually overcooked and limp, and although they may be a bit cheaper and keep longer (probably the only reason why people use them) they really are a poor substitute for the real thing.

Now, if you happen to have a garden of your own, and you can your own fruit and veg, that's another thing entirely. My mom's homemade (and then canned) tomato soup is some of the best stuff I've ever eaten. But then again, she had a say in what went in to it. I don't know of anyone who grows thier own mushrooms though...

It's a convenience thing. I always have canned mushrooms on hand, but don't really use them that often. I prefer the fresh ones, but if I decide to make something, like sauce, or something that's got to cook for hours, and I don't have the fresh on hand, canned work just fine.

I know some people are afriad they will not get them clean enough and when I looked through my recipe book last week several recipes called for them. I on the other hand when the fresh way. I find most people who say they don't like mushrooms, it is because they are thinking of the canned ones.

I would rather not use any mushrooms than use canned mushrooms.

And I do like some other canned vegetables - even though they may taste different from fresh I still like them

I agree with your reasoning on this, tinned mushrooms are vile they also have added salt to preserve them so not very good for you the look and taste like rubber unless you fry them to death yuck!!!!!!!
I guess people use them for quickness but i would rather spend 10 minutes peeling and slicing a pack of fresh ones than use that over priced rubbish

You have a point! They don't have any taste and it's not possible to fry them because of the water they have. But I keep buying them because I want to have mushrooms whenever I need them. Fresh mushrooms are tasty and full in protein (very healthy especially for vegetarians) but if you buy them you have to use them the same day or the day after, otherwise they will get black and stinky.

Some people sparky live in the wilds of northern Scotland and only see fresh mushrooms now and again. They do not have all nutritional value removed---there is very little anyway. The best way to use them is in a casserole. Really only a dork would serve them with bacon and eggs for instance.

i understand where you're coming from. my favourite vegetables are mushrooms- all kinds in fact- and i couldn't get my head around why supermarkets sell mushrooms in tin cans. they are perfect just the way they are and besides by having them in salty water, it loses its flavour and taste. plus, the appearance of them looks somewhat grey, murky and disgusting as well. with carrots, sweetcorn and peas it's not so much of a big deal. but mushrooms?! and by the way have you seen that some supermarkets even sell... wait for it tinned STRAWBERRIES! when i think about purchasing mushrooms, i always avoid buying them in cans and go for the fresh ones
