They haven't. I still find it rude. I'm one of the strange ones at my age in that I think you should take your hat off out of respect. A better question is when did people decide it is acceptable to wear ball caps, and ANY Hat, other then uniform, during the National Anthem. Oh and to clarify what I meant by THEY didn't I mean that Gentlemen still do. A man and a Gentleman are two different things.
Oh and if women, not Ladies but WOMEN, want us MEN to be more like Gentlemen then start acting like Ladies. Blame it on the Feminists. They wouldn't let us open the door for them. They wouldn't let us give up our seats to them. Now I am not from that time, a little young, but still you get the idea.

At about the same time they stopped letting a women enter that building first. By the way, these men shouldn't be referred to as "gentlemen". Real gentlemen(and they're still out there)still remove their hat, enter after a lady, and open the building's door for her!

Since not many people are wearing them any more, most places don't provide any place to put them.
Also, I don't know why it's considered polite to remove a hat, a nice hat isn't ugly to look at is it? In fact, in summer when the hair gets all sweaty and sticky-looking under a hat, I think it looks better keeping your hat on! I'm all for manners that make sense but this is one that I think is neither practical nor makes any sense, I'm glad it's gone out of the window!

Men stopped removing hats when they stopped wearing them. No one wears a hat anymore when they go out except occasionally a baseball cap on the weekends but even that isn't worn to the office.

The previous answers show an awful lot of intolerance. We gentlemen are no longer tied to Victorian principles just like gentle women aren't. A hat fits best on the head and falls off everything else, so you want us to take our hats off, provide us with Hatchecks. Until that time, we will guard our hats the best way we can. Oh and at the advent of the TV western, hats became important articles of clothing best kept secure with the wearer.

hum, I alway wonder that too, the fact is that , that is just another way that we all have been brain wash, to descriminate against each other, the same had once applied to woman staying at home, and the men work, joining the arm service, not holding im[portant seats in inportant places, staying home to take care of babies, well they are finally waking up and trying to come back too reallity, well today we 'er becoming better people I hope.

Gentlemen didn't. Uncouth, uncivilized and unpatriotic people stopped.
