What you have is called a transponder key. The idea isn't exclusive to Ford anymore. There are some locksmiths that do it now but for quality and expedience I'd urge you to go to the Ford shop. The cost isn't so high and the wait isn't as bad as you'd think as long as you have a working key that they can read and match. The real cost and wait only comes when they have to have one made from scratch.

In most locals it's a dealer only item... Some independant locksmiths do these keys but they will charge almost the same as the dealer.

If you have two keys that start the truck and want a third, the programming is in the owners manual...

If you only have one, it's dealer time and expect a bill no less than $75 for your trouble (usually half is key price, half is labor to program using Ford special tool)

The cycling 6 to 8 times is for Ford Keyless entry (4 buttoms attaches to the keychain to allow you to open the vehicle away from the truck a distance).. and usually no charge in labor as we tell owners to go find the programming in the owners manual or some dealers will just do those as common courtesy (as it requires no technician time.

Search on line and you can buy the same transponder key cheaper than at the ford dealerships. You can program it yourself in less than five minutes by repeatedly turning the ignition switch from off to electrics on (Right before the start position) It takes about 6 to 8 cycles. Just google Ford explorer key programming and you'll see...

Save yourself some $$$

If I am not mistaken from my experience with this problem you put the key in the drivers door and turn it to the left and then press a new code into the keypad on the door. Then, turn the key to the up position. Then pull the key out. Then lock the door again, press in you new code and it should work. It has been a while since I have done this but it might work for you. Good luck and I hope it works for you. Let me know and I could possibly find out for you from the dealer I used to work for.

Lucky you!

You get to go to a Ford dealership, and go through all the red tape of getting a spare key!

And yes, it costs way more then the old style keys do!
