At what point, can America turn around to the rest of the world and go.There you are, we have now won the war, and everything is normal again.

I mean seriously do you think one day the insurgents will just say, 'Hmm, we are a bit bored with all this fighting ........ok we all give up, we will leave you alone now?'

I am serious, please tell me the conditions and how they are likely to come about in which you can say 'JOB DONE'

Because it aint EVER gonna happen .......

First of all, the commander-in-chief should clearly define what victory should be. The problem is that Bush kept saying that American troops can pull out once the war is won. What does he mean by this?. There are no clear goals and objectives specified. He even stated "mission accomplished" but then decided to send additional 21,500 more troops. Even the objectives kept changing. First, the WMD's. Then came Iraq having to do with 9/11. Then came Saddam's removal from power. Then came fixing the sectarian conflict. Then what's next?. There seems to be no end to it.

A war without objectives is a war that cannot be won!.

By proving to all the world that religious superstition is just that - superstition - and nonsensical. You have to remember that a lot of the "insurgents" are extremists, and not "mainstream" Muslims that subscribe to a perverted version of what "Islam" really is. The real way to get this under control is for the moderate Muslims to get fed up enough with the extremists and stop them. Its beginning to happen, but there are still too many fanatics out there. We won't really know if its over until there hasn't been any terrorism for 100 years.

Unfortunately, the government has imposed impossible rules of engagement on our troops. They have taken skilled combat troops and attempted to turn them into police officers and social workers.

To route out an insurgency, you need to take the fight to them. You have to do house to house fighting, clearing entire neighborhoods. You have to arrest ALL who assist the insurgents in any way.

If the soldiers are restricted, and cannot do what a soldier is supposed to do, then this will be a protracted war, and I agree with you, it will not be won. The soldiers must be turned loose on the insurgency and allowed to win.

I think we should declare Iraq as US colony, we've gone so far and it's strategically important to us that we withhold this position. Make known to them we've set foot on their ground and we're not moving out until they're independent enough to rule. Can't back off from those insurgents now, they're opportunist looking to revive an evil regime. Drastic times need drastic measures.

Firstly, someone used the term Evil regime. Bush uses Evil alot in his speeches. From my side the US is the aggressor. They are the evil regime.

Secondly. This is low intensity warfare at its best. The US military is designed to fight high intensity wars. You see the problem here. The US military is simply not cut out for this type of warfare, against people who are willing to die for their beliefs and will attack in small concentrated groups against weak points in the enemy. This type of guerilla warfare is virtually impossible to defeat.
