Boredom and too much energy. He needs alot more exercise AND supervision. Whenever you cannot watch him, crate him. It will be much safer for him and your home.

Bored, anxious. Is there someone that lives in the house that's gone when this happens? If so he may be trying to find the person who left. If that's not the case give him proper things to chew. Nylabones, Kongs or other toys. Dogs naturally like to chew so make sure there are plenty of thing available instead of the walls. When he chews on the sheet rock say no and give him something he should be chewing on. It may also help to spray problem spots that he keeps returning to with bitter apple so it will taste bad and help deter him (this may just make him pick a new spot so watch)

we made the mistake of putting out puppy in the bathroom one afternoon when we had to go out (this was about 16 years ago, before we knew about crates). we came back (and we were only gone about an hour) and she wasnt in the bathroom. we saw she had chewed a hole thru the wall into the unfinished half of the basement! she did it so she could get out, but she was a very spiteful dog.
if yours is doing it when you're still there, then i would said its because its bored. if its when you're gone, its doing it to get back at you for leaving.

He may need more activity. Are there any dog parks in your area where he can wear himself out? Have him use all that energy so he won't be destructive.

Well, your dog is still a puppy. Address it when you see it happen and crate when you can't be there to watch your puppy.

he's found out it's fun, he's a puppy. You'll just need to train him not to touch it.
