How do i stop my 2 year old from sucking his thumb constantly, he gets sores on it from constantly being wet.

My sister used to suck her thumb and my mother tried everything: putting that yucky tasting stuff on her naill, pepper, saying it would go green all that and you know what worked in the end - bribery! I know you arent supposed to bribe kids but it worked! My sister wanted another cabbage patch kid (she had a boy and wanted a girl) so mum said OK if you stop sucking your thumb - and the thumb never went back in the mouth so off they went to layby it and she paid it off over 6 weeks and the thumb never went in the mouth so she had to keep her end of the bargain and paid it off - and truly she never sucked her thumb again - maybe somthing like this would work.

Bandaids dont work, at his age he will just pull it off. Are you more worried about the sores or the sucking? To help with the sores try to find lanolin, I dont know if they have it somewhere else, but thats what they use to make the cream for breatfeeding mothers for their dry nipples, anyway its safe to be swallowed so you can put that on his thumb twice a day and it should help. Try to keep his thumb out of his mouth as much as possible. Keep his hands busy, have him help you make cookies or do laundry. Kids that young enjoy helping mom, enjoy it while it lasts!! I'm not sure there is a way to stop them permanently. You might try putting band aids on his thumbs. One of my sisters sucked her thumb and just stopped on her own. Course her husband says occassionally he still catches her asleep with her thumb in her mouth and she's 38.
