If you go with the right attitude, you'll have a great time! Remember that when you go on vacation, nothing is quite how you might have expected, and you'll have a totally different experience to everyone else.
Don't expect to get the same products and services etc that you might get at home (wherever that may be).
As said before, if there is something you really don't think you can live without, then take it with you. Otherwise, enjoy being somewhere different.
Every European country will offer you something different, make sure you have a good guidebook with you, but make sure you use local knowledge too. Everywhere I've been in Europe, I've always found people in bars and cafes and hotels to be a great source of info on the best places to go and what to see etc, especially if you don't want to be stuck with the usual tourist places the whole time.
There's really nothing you won't be able to get in Europe. Plenty of cash machines so you won't be stuck for money, loads of restaurants catering to pretty much every taste (at least in most places).
Remember that the UK still uses its own currency, but most of the rest of Europe uses the Euro.
One of the best hints I could give you is learn at least a few words in the language of each country you're going to. Even if all you can say is hello, goodbye, please and thank you it will usually be appreciated!
Make friends, try everything (once at least!) and have a great time.

anticipate having a good time first, if you worry you will not enjoy your trip.
read alot on their customs, do as the Romans do when you get there,
if your american we tend to want to be loud, independent, and want everything NOW, the Europenas are more laid back, things are slower, so go with the pace.
Lastly if there are things you just cannot leave without such as a kit kat candy bar, carry your own.
Happy travelling
